While touring colleges in Pennsylvania, Mark Montgomery, an educational consultant and college counselor with a national and international clientele, noted that many of social spaces and commons areas, like the student centers, were markedly quiet and empty. Of course, student unions and student centers may be more or less bustling, depending on the time of day and the time of year. But a perceptive tour guide at Ursinus College remarked that much of the reason that social spaces are so dead is that everyone uses texting and Facebook to connect. No longer do kids need to congregate in one area to meet one another. No longer do kids have whiteboards on their dorm rooms to communicate. Instead, the social space is electronic and the messages are bits and bytes. During a visit to Drexel University in Philadelphia, Mark remarked on this phenomenon as he walked through the (empty) student center. We work with students around the country–and around the world.
